Professor Renée Leon is the fifth Vice-Chancellor and President of Charles Sturt University, commencing in the role in September 2021.
She leads Australia’s largest regional university, championing its mission to educate the skilled professionals who sustain regional communities and to drive research that solves the challenges facing rural and remote Australia.

In her tenure at Charles Sturt, Professor Leon has strengthened the University’s role as a cornerstone of regional prosperity.

Under her leadership the University has grown student load, especially among about First Nations Australians and students from equity backgrounds, and maintained its ranking as the number one public university in Australia for undergraduate employment.

She has also overseen an uplift in research output and industry engagement which deliver practical solutions in agriculture, health and environmental management.

Prior to joining Charles Sturt, Professor Leon’s career included extensive experience in senior leadership roles across Commonwealth and State public administration. 

She holds degrees in Arts and Law from the Australian National University and a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge as the 1995 Menzies Foundation Law Scholar.

Professor Leon is on the board of Universities Australia and Deputy Convenor of the NSW Vice-Chancellors Committee.
