Rhanee Rego is an Australian lawyer renowned for her instrumental role in securing the exoneration of Kathleen Folbigg, who had been wrongfully convicted of killing her four children in 2003. Ms Rego has assisted Ms Folbigg since 2017, advocating for her miscarriage of justice to be overturned. Her tireless efforts, in collaboration with legal professionals, medical experts and others. This was pivotal to the establishment of a second Inquiry into Kathleen Folbigg’s convictions. This ultimately led to a historic pardon for Ms Folbigg in June 2023 followed by her exoneration in December 2023. Ms Rego’s work has been widely praised for its significant contribution to the rectification of wrongful convictions in Australia and emphasises the need for law reform to postconviction review.
As a dedicated criminal law solicitor, she specialises in cases in which miscarriages of justice have occurred. She is the principal at Rhanee Rego & Associates. Ms Rego is also a PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle researching post-conviction review in New South Wales. She is due to complete her thesis this year. She also serves as a sessional academic at the university where she contributes her expertise to the next generation of legal professionals.
